2009: celebrating 20 years of the Convention
The Convention was meant to transform society, as it recognised that children are protagonists of their own development instead of being possessions of their parents and families. It required from society to act in the best interest of the child, and acknowledged their right to express their opinions and to have those opinions heard and acted upon when appropriate.

Child malnutrition study finds that early prevention is best
Preventing infants and young children from becoming undernourished is
much more effective than treating children who are already
malnourished, according to a new study published in the 16 February
issue of leading medical journal The Lancet.
The study in Haiti found that three indicators of child
malnutrition—stunting, being underweight and wasting—were between four
and six percentage points lower among poor communities participating in
preventative nutrition programmes rather than recuperative ones.

HRH Princess Maxima launches Aflatoun Campaign
On 17th March 2008, Aflatoun's global Campaign for Child Social &

2008 State of the World's Children report launched
GENEVA, 22 JANUARY 2008 – Strategies that can help reduce the number of
children who die before their fifth birthday were highlighted today, at
the launch of UNICEF’s flagship report - The State of the World’s
Children 2008: Child Survival – in Geneva.
While recent data show a fall in the rate of under-five mortality,

GCAP launches global mobilisation plans for 2008
March 7th, 2008
Beginning with International Women’s Day on March 8th, a series of key
dates will see mobilisations calling for trade justice, debt
cancellation, aid effectiveness, gender equality, good governance and
the Millennium Development Goals. To mark the 60th Anniversary of the
Universal Declaration on Human Rights, GCAP will also support and
campaign around the issue of Freedom from Poverty as a human right.
